Quick newbie-ish question. I use a CDR with baseq2/action v1.52 to install on my/my roommates' computers. Only problem is, on my new machine, quake has no sound. Sound in windows, but not Q2. I'm running win98 on a 700 Athlon, using an Asus K7M mobo for sound purposes. Any ideas? And yes, the speakers are plugged in. Wiseass. ------------------ "Who wants to live forever?" -[ST7]Rawlings, the realism nut, out. IP: 24.169.89.234 |

Psycho: I hear everything in windows, from the lame startup sound that I haven't disabled yet, to the sound of my brains dribbling out my ears whenever it starts up.Defaults reset... nada. Drivers *should* be fine, because I hear everything else. X: I've switched between compatibility and performance several times. nada. Yog: nope. IP: 24.169.89.234 |

Another thing just happened. I'm installing the software for my CD-R, and normally the install program plays this stupid music while it's running, but now it's not. Checked that the volume was all the way up, yes.Hmmm. IP: 24.169.89.234 |

The current theory is that something's amiss between my video card (Voodoo3 3500 TV) and mobo (Asus K7M). It shipped with the VidCard's AUDIO OUT plugged into the mobo's CD AUDIO IN. I've since switched that so the CD-ROM's AUDIO OUT leads to the mobo's CD AUDIO IN, and the VidCard's AUDIO OUT leads to the mobo's AUDIO AUX IN. (Bear in mind that Q2 sounds didn;t work before I did this, and they still don't work afterwards.)My thinking is that Windows sounds work because they're just using the sound board built into the mobo. But when I start 3D accelerating a game, the VidCard's sound takes over, but it's not reaching my speakers through the mobo. Is this reasoning fucked? If not, I'm stumped as to what to do. The mobo has three Audio ports: CD, VIDEO, and AUX. I've tried plugging the VidCard's audio out into all three of these, to no avail. All the mobo's audio codecs are enabled, and I'd really rather not fuck around with them. Ah well. When I get home I'll try some shit they suggest on the 3dfx website. ------------------ "Who wants to live forever?" -[ST7]Rawlings, the realism nut, out. IP: 128.253.48.187 |

Well, none of that shit worked, but by fooling around in the control panel I managed to tell it to use "Any device" as the primary sound controller, and it works! I can only assume from this that the VidCard was trying to do Q2 sounds, but Windows wouldn't let it because it was insisting on using the integral sound card. So keep that in mind in case anybody else asks such an inane question in the future.Oh, and another tip: if your monitor isn't receiving a signal, check the connections on the hard drive. I doubt this is it but are you running quake off the install cd (IE you didn't do full install)? If so check your cable from the CD-Rom to the mobo... though you should still be hearing some sounds in quake.IP: 152.7.71.120 |

Umm, thanks but... I did figure it out. And the video card has audio out because it has TV-in. So audio would help. IP: 24.169.92.93 |
