Idle: Please, tell us a little bit about your self, so our readers can get some idea of the man behind Siege.
Bobert: I'm 30 years old, living in Hopedale Massachusetts (spelling!).
Married for almost 1 year. Degree in Electrical Engineering from UMass.
No kids, yet (Eeek!)
Idle: What do you do beside gaming (hobbies, work)?
Bobert: I enjoy skiing & volleyball.
Have spent many hours helping friends & family with computer problems.. mostly hardware problems.
Upgrades & stuff. I did a "home wiring project" last year.
Set up Phone, RJ45, Cable & RCA to every room in my town house.
It was a lot of work, but well worth it for LAN parties & blasting MP3 all around the house.
Idle: Where do you get your ideas for your maps?
Bobert: Playing the game dictated the general layout.
Any good map (in my opinion) needs to be "mostly" an open area, with a couple of "inside" placed.
But never so many, that the "last two" chase eachother around in circles for 2 minutes.
I'm not really sure where the idea of a castle came from.
Probably a drunken discussion with a friend or two?
Idle: How long have you been mapping?
Bobert: Siege was my first map, so I "was" mapping for about six months total.
Idle: What are your inspirations?
Bobert: Oh.. there were MANY great ideas from the AQ Map Depot & the forums.
Excellent advice on perfecting the tiny details & stuff.
God & a love of the church.
Just kidding.. A love of AQ2 inspired me to make Siege.
Idle: Do you prefer to play on indoor maps or outdoor maps?
Bobert: Either really, it depends on the map & what weapon I'm carrying.
What I don't like are "tiny" rooms..
Especially ones that don't go anywhere like the bathroom in Actcity3.
What's up with that room?!
Idle: When you were making Siege, did you have some specific style of play in mind?
Bobert: I attempted to satisfy all types (Yes, even the campers).
I prefer the "charge" mentality myself, and based on the spawn points,
you can usually tell where the other team started pretty quickly.
That usually means a quick round.... Usually.
Idle: Siege 2 is a very popular map, and many people name it first when asked about their favourite map. How do you feel about that?
Bobert: Really? Well, I think that great, but I don't see this popularity.
I saw it only once through gamespy, but my ping was 1300 when I got there!
I've really only played it once or twice with a significant number of humans.
I'd love to find it on a server out there.. (in my neighborhood)
Idle: What other wonders have you created (not neccesarily in AQ2)?
Bobert: I did some projects in school for the hadicapped.
Pretty proud of the home network thing too.
Other then that, my life is pretty much work, friend, family, beer & AQ2.
I have a bottle cap "collection" that may somday be made into a mural of sorts.
Idle: Are you working on a new AQ2 map now, or do you plan on making another in the future?
Bobert: Nope.. refer to a few questions back!
Although, Sometimes I find myself in a mall or airport and think.. "Hey, this would make a good map."
Idle: Ahh... limited time, right?
Bobert: Yup.. time & I don't see my map on-line anywhere.
Idle: Yeah, that's not really encouraging for mappers.
Bobert: No shit... It's pretty damn discouraging!
Idle: What do you think of the feared r_speeds?
Bobert: I feel (or guess) that the majority of people out there now have video cards that can support almost any number of triangles.
I think that it's still important to limit them where possible,
but not if it's going to take away from the beauty of a map.
Idle: Got some advice to new mappers?
Bobert: Utilize the forum at the Depot. The advice is priceless.
Idle: Is there anything else you'd like to add before we stop?
Bobert: Need to send big hellos to my UaT brothers and sisters, family and friends!
Idle: It's been a pleasure talking with you, I'm sure this short "interview" will be appreciated by our visitors!
Bobert: Thanks bud, 'twas fun! Shoot you later!
